C.A.R. recommends that REALTORS® who are independent contractors should wait for the California Employment Development Department (EDD) to launch its new Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) application before filing for unemployment compensation. However, if you might be eligible for benefits under the regular unemployment compensation system, you should apply now.
California Labor Secretary Julie A. Su announced that the EDD will need until Tuesday, April 28, to have the application system up and running.
Secretary Su released an open letter that contains more information on the PUA program, which extends unemployment benefits to the self-employed and independent contractors.
Once the system goes live, she anticipates individuals will be able to receive payments within 24 to 48 hours of their applications being approved.
The California Association of REALTORS® continues to urge the EDD to move as quickly as possible to get our members much-needed relief.
C.A.R. will communicate the actual application start date, along with other guidance, as soon as that information is made available by the EDD.
You can read the full letter here. For more information on PUA, see C.A.R.’s FAQ.
