Illinois has the highest property taxes in the country, at 2.67%, while Hawaii has the lowest, at .31%. California is in the middle (I’ll bet you expected us to be higher!).
According to CoreLogic, the average median property tax rate across the nation is 1.31 percent, which means a home valued at $200,000 will, on average, be billed a total of $2,620 in total annual property taxes. The chart shows that the median property tax rate for California is 1.12%.
“Typically, the states with the highest property tax rates, with the exception of Illinois, have multiple levels of tax collection,” says CoreLogic. Multiple levels might mean paying into a county, a village and a school district, for example.
